Moonlight Madness in Downtown Mason City!

There's something wild about cruising on your bike in the middle of the night! Imagine the exhilaration of pedaling through the streets of Mason City with the light of the moon defining the course for you and hundreds of other cyclists.

Join us Saturday Night, July 29, 2006. Whether you're an avid cyclist or you're simply looking for a great reason to dust off that bike in the garage, you won't want to miss the 3rd Annual MOONLIGHT BIKE RIDE.

An Historical Idea
The MOONLIGHT BIKE RIDE will start and finish in Southbridge Mall’s parking lot. The 20-mile course will tour landmarks, new and old. The sights you see will all seem very different as you pedal your bike by the light of the moon. A 10-mile course will also be available.

Not just a ride
While the ride starts at 10:00 p.m. (come moonlight or rain!), there will be Music, Games and Fun for all ages starting at 8:30 in the Southbridge mall parking lot. And at 9:30, we’ll have an outrageous costume party – come join in the fun and be a big winner! In addition to an amazing night of peddling in the city by moonlight, each participant will receive...
• A headlight and taillight for your bicycle - 1 set per registration. Additional light sets will be available to purchase. Family registrations are limited to 4 sets of lights
• Omelet Breakfast
• Great snacks and Live Entertainment at the Midnight Snack Stops

Midnight Snack Stops
Two Midnight Snack Stops along the course will be stocked with eye-opening refreshments.

Breakfast
When you finish your ride, a delicious omelet breakfast will be awaiting you back at Southbridge Mall’s South Entrance.

Rules of the Road
As you can imagine, from 10:00 p.m. to midnight the automobile traffic will be light. However, the portion of the course that is on city streets will be open to cars. Riders will need to show caution. Here are a few tips for safe moonlight riding:
• All bikes must be equipped with a front and rear light.
Bicycles should also have both front and rear reflectors for visibility.
Helmets are required for cyclists and their child passengers.
• Carry identification with you.
• Ride slower and more cautiously than you would by daylight - darkness tends to impair depth perception and the hazards will be more difficult to see.
• Obey all traffic signs and lights.
• Follow the instructions of the Mason City Police Officers and the safety course marshals.
• Ride in the same direction as the automobile traffic.
• Stay on the right side of the street: ride no more than two abreast.
• It's always a good idea to wear white or light- colored clothing for visibility.
• Bike strollers should have reflectors and vertical flags.
• Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• We recommend you choose a departure time that will include riders who are likely to pedal at a similar speed and have a similar mentality.

10:00 Gonzo
10:05 Cruisers
10:10 Family time

Although there will be volunteer safety marshals along the route to provide assistance, it’s still a good idea to carry a call phone with you so you can call 911 if an emergency arises.
